Local businesses, distinguished military support Hope For The Warriors® at Got Heart, Give Hope Gala

On April 22, 2010, Hope For The Warriors® honored wounded service members, their families, and the families of the fallen at the Got Heart, Give Hope Gala at Union Station in Washington, D.C. Hope & Courage Awards were given to representatives from each branch of the military, all of whom inspire others with remarkable stories of recovery and achievement. Actor Gary Sinise hosted the awards ceremony and Kenneth Fisher, Chairman and CEO of the Fisher House Foundation, gave the keynote address.

The black-tie event drew a crowd of local business leaders and senior military including the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps and his wife, General and Mrs. James Amos, Medal of Honor recipient, Colonel & Mrs.Barney Barnum, USMC, (Ret.)and General & Mrs. Richard Cody, USA.

Country music star Rockie Lynne sang the National Anthem. The evening’s emcee was 1st Lt. Ed Salau, NC USA (Ret.), a combat amputee who currently works as a civilian at the U.S. Marine Corps’ Wounded Warrior Battalion East, Camp Lejeune, NC.

SPC Brendan Marrocco, USA

The award recipients were Spc. Brendan Marrocco, USA, a quadruple amputee, Cpl. Matt Bradford, USMC, a blind, double amputee who recently made history with his promotion and four-year reenlistment. SSgt. Meghan Duprey, USAF, and Lt. Jason "Jay" Redman, USN, a gunshot wound victim and former special ops Navy Seal. Additionally we presented the award to Gold Star Mother Anne Adkins whose son Spc. Matt Bolar, USA, was killed in Iraq and Mary Gallagher, whose husband, GySgt. James Gallagher, USMC, committed suicide after returning from a combat tour. A special caregiver award will be presented to Cindy Traub, the wife of MSgt. Carl Traub, USMC (Ret.), who suffered a spinal cord injury and the loss of both legs in Iraq.

The Hope & Courage Award was designed by John Phelps, a sculptor from Dubois, WY and father of LCpl. Chance Phelps, USMC, KIA, Iraq. In February 2009, HBO premiered Taking Chance, the moving story of the journey home from Iraq for LCpl. Phelps.
